Preppers don’t usually think about moving, especially if they plan to bug in when disaster strikes.
But if you often find yourself reorganizing your stockpile of supplies, you might want to invest in sturdy storage options and a versatile shelving system to easily transport your food supply if you need to relocate before SHTF. This might sound like it will take a lot of work, but it’s very doable with proper planning. (h/t to TheSurvivalMom.com.)
If you start with a versatile shelving system, you can store more items if you have racks that can be tightly stacked next to each other. Get racks that can also be moved if you need to rotate your stock.
Try a sliding shelving system or a shelving system that can be rotated so you don’t have to do a lot of heavy lifting.
While you can keep boxes of supplies on the floor, it’s better to organize items in storage bins and shelves because anything you leave on the floor may be susceptible to water damage, spillage, insects and rodents.
Having moveable food storage means you can set up your stockpile in your garage or a spare room without building a lot of fixed-position shelving. If you change your mind about where you want to keep your stockpile or you want to use the room for something else other than storage, the racks can be easily moved out.
Consider storage options when home shopping to save more time while stockpiling supplies.
Since a lot of shelving units look the same, it can be difficult to find one that suits your specific needs. (Related: 6 Common stockpiling mistakes and how to avoid them.)
Here are some tips to narrow down your choices:
Check the load specifications before purchasing anything. Get shelves that are heavy-duty enough to handle the weight of the items you will be putting on them.
Get shelves with heavy-duty wheels. Some shelf systems look great, but they might have cheap wheels. Check unbiased reviews or get in touch with the manufacturer.
Check if the shelves come with wheels. Some shelves don’t and may require a separate purchase.
To save money, invest in a combination of inexpensive lighter-duty shelves with heavier-duty shelves.
Keep things portable and store food supplies in clear plastic storage bins. Just make sure you store the bins in a dark, dry room away from sunlight.
Here are some things to consider before buying your storage bins:
Buy bins that will fit on the shelves you already have. Double-check the front-to-back dimensions and the side-to-side dimensions.
If you are storing items that often attract pests, keep them in gasket bins.
Since canned food doesn’t usually attract pests or insects, you can keep them in less-expensive bins. Check if they’re strong enough to store heavier items in.
Follow these tips if you need to move with your stockpile shelves:
Get a moving truck that is tall enough to accommodate your shelving, including the wheels. Check the height of the inside of the truck and the door height.
Wrap the shelves with stretch wrap to prevent items from sliding off. Use black pallet stretch wrap to keep the contents private.
Choose a moving truck with a ramp so you can slide the shelves in easily.
Use grid paper and plan so you already know where you’ll be keeping the stocked shelves.
Label all shelving units so that when you arrive, the movers can get each rack in the right place. This will save you time and effort.
