Perk up your morning brew with CBD oil!

Cannabidiol (CBD) is the latest trend of things to put in your coffee – following medium-chain triglycerides, collagen peptides and mushrooms. This cannabinoid derived from marijuana (Cannabis sativa) offers the latter’s stimulant properties without its psychoactive effects. This is because CBD lacks tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, the substance responsible for marijuana’s “high.”

A number of people have been adding CBD oil to their cup of joe. Some do so to counter the jittery feeling associated with excessive coffee consumption. Others consume CBD-infused coffee to help them focus on their tasks. American Cannabinoid Clinics co-founder Dr. Jessica Knox pointed out four important facts about drinking CBD-infused coffee.

CBD coffee combines the benefits of both into one drink

Knox compared CBD coffee consumption to a two-birds-one-stone situation. “You’re not getting any additional benefit from either the CBD or the caffeine by consuming them together compared to consuming them separately,” she said. Knox added that it was all about preference: “But if with your coffee is how you like to take your CBD, by all means – take them together!”

However, combining CBD oil with a hot drink such as coffee may reduce its beneficial effects. A 2012 study warned that exposing marijuana to heat can decrease the effects of its compounds – including CBD. Thus, it is best to let hot coffee cool down a bit before adding CBD oil. Cold drinks such as iced coffee or iced tea would not affect the benefits of CBD.

CBD and caffeine will not neutralize each other in the body

The caffeine in coffee works by preventing the neurotransmitter adenosine – which is responsible for making the body feel tired – from binding to the brain’s receptors. This subsequently delays the body’s sleepiness. On the other hand, CBD reduces the amount of adenosine the body absorbs by keeping it in the brain.

Knox remarked: “CBD and caffeine do not interact. So presumably, you can take caffeine and CBD together – and still derive the respective benefits of both.” She added that despite their relation, the effects of CBD and caffeine “are neither synergistic nor antagonistic to one another.”

It is best to start with a low dose of CBD oil and increase depending on your needs

Knox said that “there is no single optimal CBD dose that applies to everyone” as different people have different responses to CBD. “The dose that works for your family member of your friend will likely be different from the dose that works for you,” she commented.

However, Knox remarked that most clinicians recommend an initial five milligrams of CBD oil. This can be slowly increased depending on your preference. “A gradual titration of CBD allows you to find the dose … best for you. Ultimately, 20 to 50 milligrams of total daily CBD seems to be a good wellness dose for most of us,” she said.

It will take some time before you see the effects of drinking CBD coffee

The doctor mentioned that “generally healthy people may not ‘feel’ any particular difference” with CBD coffee consumption. However, this does not mean that the drink did not have any effect – they still obtain the general benefits of CBD. Knox compared it to incorporating a new vitamin supplement or starting a new skincare regimen: Noticeable results would not immediately appear.

However, some may notice CBD coffee’s effects on their disposition after a couple of weeks. They reported being less stressed in general and having a friendlier mood. CBD coffee’s positive effect on one’s mood comes from its components. A 2011 study found that women who consumed more cups of coffee had a lower risk of depression. Meanwhile, a 2014 study found that animals given CBD exhibited lower levels of anxiety and depression based on test results determining these mental issues.
