7 Healthy smoothies to get you out of your breakfast rut

Tired of eating eggs, toast or cereal for breakfast? Try smoothies! Smoothies help you secure several servings of fresh fruits and vegetables in a single “meal.” They also happen to be incredibly delicious!

So long as your smoothies have a good balance of essential nutrients–protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, healthy fats and minerals–they can make a healthy breakfast.

So bust out that blender and whip up the following smoothies that deliver both a great deal of flavor and a huge dose of good-for-you nutrients. They might just turn you into a morning person!

Blueberry spinach smoothie

Flavor has never been spinach’s strong suit. Still, it’s loaded with several essential nutrients, including vitamins A, C and K. The solution? Mix spinach with sweet blueberries! Blueberries have a powerful flavor profile that helps “hide” the mild, bitter flavor of raw spinach leaves. Plus, blueberries are packed with antioxidants!

To make at least two servings of this smoothie, blend 2 large strawberries, 1 banana, 2/3 cup Greek yogurt, 2/3 cup frozen blueberries, 1 cup spinach leaves, 1/2 cup coconut or almond milk and 1 tablespoon of raw honey.

Vegan almond smoothie

Smoothies are commonly made with cow’s milk for a smooth and creamy consistency. But with the many vegan milk substitutes on the market, this is no longer a problem if you’re following a vegan diet or can’t digest milk.

To make this smoothie, blend 1 overripe banana, 1 cup unsweetened almond milk, 1/2 cup frozen blueberries, 2 tablespoons rolled oats and 1 tablespoon almond butter. You can also add a Medjool date for extra sweetness.

Berry banana oat smoothie

Using naturally sweet ingredients like strawberries and bananas in your smoothies is a great way to lessen your sugar intake. Plus, fruits and whole grains like oats are excellent sources of fiber. This nutrient helps your digestive system run smoothly. It also cleans your colon of toxins and other harmful compounds.

For a filling breakfast smoothie, blend the following ingredients until smooth: 1 cup oat or almond milk, 1 large frozen banana, 5–10 strawberries, 3/4 cup presoaked rolled oats, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and 1 teaspoon raw honey. Add more milk if needed to reach the desired consistency.

Healthy PB&J smoothie

Inspired by the classic PB&J sandwich, this healthy breakfast smoothie recipe uses all-natural peanut butter. It also swaps processed jam for real, tasty berries to give you a healthy dose of disease-fighting antioxidants.

To make this smoothie, blend 1 cup frozen mixed berries (strawberries, blueberries or raspberries), 1 cup oat or almond milk, 2 tablespoons rolled oats and 1–2 tablespoons of all-natural peanut butter.

High-protein smoothie

Protein-packed smoothies are great for those who like to work out in the morning. Protein is the building block of muscle. It also helps grow, maintain and repair tissues damaged by exercise. Plus, downing a protein-packed smoothie can keep you full for longer. This helps ward off the hunger pangs that occur after exercising.

For an intense, high-protein workout smoothie, blend 2 dates, 1 banana, 1 tablespoon nut butter, 2 tablespoons hemp seeds, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon powder and 1 glass of oat, almond or coconut milk.

Creamy orange smoothie

Oranges are packed with vitamin C. This essential micronutrient is well-known for its immune-boosting effects and antioxidant properties. Plus, oranges contain several other nutrients and compounds that help ward off diseases and support overall health, such as potassium, fiber, choline, B vitamins and beta-carotene.

Blend these ingredients until smooth for an immune-boosting smoothie: 2 mandarin oranges, 1 frozen banana, 1/3 cup Greek yogurt and some ice cubes. You can also add raw honey to taste for extra sweetness.

Detox avocado smoothie

Rich, creamy avocados add a smooth texture to morning smoothies. They also pack heart-healthy fats that help keep your cholesterol levels down. This particular avocado smoothie also features ingredients that support your digestion and help in removing toxins and other potentially harmful compounds from your body.

To whip up this green detox smoothie, blend 1/2 large frozen banana, 1 cup frozen pineapple chunks, 1/2 cup water, 1/2 cup coconut water, 1/4 cup parsley, 2 tablespoons avocado, 1 teaspoon grated ginger, 1/4 teaspoon probiotic powder and a few slices of lemon or lime.

Make breakfast more delicious and nutritious by trying some healthy homemade smoothies. And once you find your favorite recipes, try adding more healthy ingredients to the mix, like nuts and seeds, for extra nutrients.
