Relieve heartburn with this soothing pear and ACV smoothie

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is a versatile superfood that’s used for various home remedies. It can even be used to relieve heartburn.

Heartburn refers to a burning sensation in your chest that’s usually accompanied by a bitter taste in your throat or mouth. Heartburn symptoms may worsen after eating a large meal or when you’re lying down.

In most cases, you can treat the symptoms of this condition with home remedies. But if you have trouble eating or swallowing because of frequent heartburn, your symptoms may indicate a more serious underlying medical condition.

What causes heartburn?

Heartburn occurs when the contents of your stomach back up into your esophagus, the tube that carries food and fluids from your mouth into the stomach.

The esophagus connects to your stomach at a juncture called the cardiac or lower esophageal sphincter. If there aren’t any problems with your cardiac sphincter, it closes when food leaves your esophagus and enters the stomach.

But if your cardiac sphincter doesn’t function properly or it becomes weakened, the contents of your stomach may leak back into the esophagus. Stomach acids may irritate your esophagus and cause symptoms of heartburn and this condition is called reflux or acid reflux.

Other factors, like health conditions or lifestyle choices, can aggravate heartburn, like:

  • Being overweight or obese.
  • Eating chocolate or drinking alcohol and caffeinated beverages.
  • Eating spicy foods.
  • Lying down immediately after eating a heavy meal.
  • Smoking.
  • Taking certain medications, like aspirin or ibuprofen.

Addressing heartburn with apple cider vinegar

Lori Kenyon Farley, the co-founder of Ritual Wellness, advised that the “best way to treat heartburn is to prevent it.”

To prevent heartburn, you need to figure out what triggers your symptoms. First, check which cause your heartburn and eliminate them from your diet.

According to Elizabeth Brown, owner of the healthy lifestyle cooking show The Kitchen Vixen, consuming too much fat can slow digestion and aggravate heartburn symptoms. Brown, who is also a registered dietitian and holistic chef, warned that even good fats like olives, nuts and seeds can trigger heartburn symptoms.

If you suffer from heartburn, eat small meals three to six times a day so you don’t eat too much at once. Doing this puts less stress on your stomach and body, which then minimizes heartburn symptoms.

You can also try drinking more liquids or smoothies since eating bigger chunks of food requires more stomach acid to break down. Certain superfoods also act as natural remedies for stomach acidity.

Eating the following foods can help relieve or prevent heartburn symptoms:

  • Anise seeds
  • Bananas
  • Aloe vera
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Apples
  • Cantaloupe
  • Celery
  • Chamomile
  • Fresh fennel bulb, sliced
  • Fresh ginger root
  • Green tea
  • Parsley
  • Pears
  • Pumpkin
  • Watermelon

Add these superfoods to juices, smoothies, or and teas to naturally relieve the painful symptoms of heartburn.

Consuming apple cider vinegar can help introduce more acid into your digestive tract. If acid reflux is caused by too little stomach acid, this can help relieve your heartburn.

Additionally, ACV also contains acetic acid that can help fight bacteria and other foreign bodies that may cause infections or disease.
