Healthy kitchen hacks: Homemade whole-wheat tortilla recipe (plus bonus recipes)

Bread, cookies, pastries and tortillas made with all-purpose flour (white flour) are not as healthy as those made with whole-wheat or white whole-wheat flour. If you want to make healthy snacks for your family, learn how to make whole-wheat tortillas at home!

The difference between whole-wheat and white whole-wheat flour

Whole-wheat flour is made from hard red spring or winter wheat and has a nutty, hearty taste. To make whole-wheat flour, the bran, germ and endosperm — all three layers of the wheat berries, that is — are ground. The final product is a bold, wholesome flour.

White flour, or all-purpose flour, lacks the nutty-tasting, fiber-rich bran and germ used in whole wheat flours. If your recipe calls for white flour, you can replace it with the same amount of whole-wheat flour.

On the other hand, white whole-wheat flour is made from hard white spring or winter wheat. White whole-wheat flour has the same nutritional value as whole-wheat flour, but the former has a milder flavor and a paler color.

White whole-wheat flour is a good alternative if you don’t like the hearty taste of whole-wheat flour.

Homemade whole-wheat tortilla recipe

Skip the unhealthy store-bought tortillas and make your own tortillas at home using only four ingredients!

Ingredients for 8 servings:

  • 2 cups of white whole-wheat flour
  • 2/3 cup of warm water
  • 3 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt

Preparation:

  1. Get a bowl and combine the flour, oil and salt.
  2. Slowly add the warm water while stirring. When you’re done, you should have a rough dough. Add a bit more water if needed.
  3. Place the dough on the counter and knead for at least two minutes. Return the dough to the bowl and let it rest for 20 minutes.
  4. Divide the dough into eight equal balls. Roll each ball into a circle, as thin as you can make them.
  5. Heat a pan over medium-high heat and grease it lightly. Drop one dough circle into the pan and let it cook for at least one minute or until bubbles form.
  6. Flip the dough and cook for another minute. Press down with a spatula if needed. Repeat with the remaining dough.
  7. Serve immediately. If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the fridge or freezer.

Notes:

  • The tortillas will come out a little too hard if they’re rolled too thinly. Leave the dough a little thicker when you roll them into circles.

This recipe makes snack time twice as fun for your kids since they can also eat the tortilla bowls that you’ll be serving their taco salad in!

Ingredients:

For the tortilla bowls:

  • Cooking spray
  • 6 oven-safe bowls
  • 6 burrito-sized whole-wheat flour tortillas
  • Shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

For the taco salad:

  • Black beans rinsed, drained and heated
  • Cilantro, chopped
  • Green onion, chopped
  • Lettuce
  • Tomatoes, diced
  • Shredded cheese
  • Your choice of dressing

Preparation:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 F.
  2. Coat the inside of the oven-safe bowls with cooking spray. Gently press the tortillas inside each bowl. Place the bowls on two large baking sheets then bake for 14 to 16 minutes or until evenly browned. If you add cheese, remove the tortilla bowls from the oven two to three minutes before they’re done baking. Sprinkle with cheese, then return to oven. Finish baking until the cheese is melted, then let the tortilla bowls cool in the bowls for five minutes before transferring to a wire cooling rack.
  3. When you’re ready to eat, fill the tortilla bowls with your preferred taco salad fixings like black beans, cilantro, diced tomatoes, green onion, lettuce and shredded cheese. Top with your choice of dressing.

Note:

  • If you make the tortilla bowls in advance, you can store them in an airtight container for at least two days.
  • For a meatier taco salad in a tortilla bowl, add shredded chicken, beef or pork.
