10 Foods that help whiten teeth naturally

Teeth discoloration is bound to happen over time. But the consumption of certain foods and beverages like coffee, tea and red wine, along with tobacco use and poor dental hygiene, can accelerate this process and leave an unsightly stain on the surface of the teeth.

Various teeth-whitening products like gels and toothpastes are readily available on the market, but synthetic products often cause side effects like teeth sensitivity, gum irritation and the erosion of tooth enamel.

Fortunately, several foods and vegetables contain powerful plant compounds that can prevent or eliminate teeth discoloration. Here are 10 fruits and vegetables that double as natural teeth whiteners.

1. Strawberries

Fruits like strawberries are excellent sources of malic acid, a natural astringent that also acts as a natural bleaching agent. Strawberries also contain vitamin C, which can prevent plaque buildup and cavity formation. Additionally, strawberries are excellent sources of ellagitannins, antioxidants that have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that prevent mouth sores and oral infections.

2. Apples

Like strawberries, apples also contain high amounts of the natural bleaching agent known as malic acid. Besides its teeth whitening effect, malic acid also increases the production of saliva, which can also remove stains and prevent bacterial growth inside the mouth. To naturally whiten teeth, simply chew on apple slices to “scrub” the surface of the teeth. Let it sit inside the mouth for at least five minutes and rinse afterward. Brush and floss as usual.

3. Coconut oil

Oils that contain high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids can be used to improve oral health. Coconut oil, for instance, also contains calcium that aids tooth development. It also has antibacterial properties that support gum health and prevent the formation of cavities. To whiten teeth, use coconut oil as a gargle and swish it inside the mouth for at least 15 minutes. Be sure to avoid swallowing the oil itself or the spittle that forms while gargling. Alternatively, you can also use sesame oil or extra virgin olive oil.

4. Celery

Crunchy vegetables like celery act as natural stain removers by increasing the production of saliva. In particular, celery also has high levels of fibrous cellulose that can act as a natural toothbrush. Chewing on celery stalks also prevents the accumulation of food debris and plaque that cause bad breath. Alternatively, you can also use carrot sticks to achieve the same result.

5. Broccoli

Broccoli is an excellent source of dietary fiber that can prevent oral inflammation and infection. Munching on raw broccoli stalks or florets can also polish the surface of the teeth to remove unsightly spots. Additionally, the iron content of broccoli can fortify the teeth against bacteria that cause oral cavities.

6. Carrots

Chewing raw carrots will stimulate the production of saliva in your mouth, cleaning it further. The vitamin A in carrots can also help strengthen tooth enamel.

7. Basil

8. Pineapple

You can also use onions, leeks, chives and shallots to achieve the same effect.
