5 Delicious fruits you can grow indoors

Fresh fruits are excellent sources of essential nutrients that your body needs. When you include fruits in your diet, you help protect your body against various diseases and health complications.

However, local markets often only carry certain fruits at a time due to seasonal constraints. For instance, lemons, oranges and grapefruits are plenty in winter. Berries, on the other hand, grow abundantly during summer.

Still, you don’t have to wait entire months for your favorite fruits to fall – you can grow your own indoors.

Before you start looking for fruit seeds, make sure you have an airy room with big windows so sunlight can easily pass through. If you don’t have an extra room lying around, a spacious porch or veranda can work. Moreover, it’s important to research extensively about tips and lessons on growing fruit trees, as they often require meticulous care. For starters, make sure you use good-quality, well-draining soil, organic fertilizers and big garden pots. Plants also thrive better indoors when there is an adequate amount of sunlight and favorable temperature conditions.

Once you get the basics right, you can begin growing your own fruit trees. Here are some delicious fruits you can easily grow within the comforts of your home.

Apricots

Dwarf varieties of fruit trees often grow tremendously well when cultivated in pots. Prunus armeniaca, for instance, is one variety of dwarf apricot trees that do well indoors. This variety grows best when placed in a large pot filled with loamy soil. Dwarf apricot trees also need to be thoroughly watered each day.

Lemons and oranges

Like apricots, lemons and oranges also do best indoors as dwarf varieties. Luckily, most citrus trees can be grown as dwarves. One example of this is the Meyer lemon, which is a hybrid citrus fruit native to China. Unlike other varieties, the Meyer lemon tree produces sweet, delicious lemons. However, this tree thrives best in humid conditions, so you might need to place a pebble tray underneath its pot to provide humidity.

If you prefer to cultivate oranges, you can try growing a Calamondin tree. This variety of orange is a good tree for starters since it grows well indoors with little to moderate care.

Because these are dwarf varieties, they already have a good chance of thriving indoors by default. Just remember to always keep them in a well-lit area. If lack of sunlight becomes a problem, especially in dark winter months, you can easily remedy this by using a bright lamp as an alternative light source.

Avocados

If you love guacamole and avocado salads, then it may be time to start growing your very own avocado tree. In Mexico, many people grow avocados as house plants. They start by sticking toothpicks into the avocado seed and suspending it over a glass of water with the bottom-half submerged. The seed is left in this state for a couple of days and placed in a well-lit area. Eventually, you will need to transfer it onto a pot. Because avocado trees typically grow to be 30 to 40 feet tall, prune your plant regularly to keep its height the way you want it.

Peaches

Peach trees typically grow up to 25 feet in open fields, but some natural dwarf varieties like Bonanza can grow as short as 30 inches only. Like the Calamondin tree, the Bonanza peach tree is sensitive to temperature conditions. It needs an environment of about 50 to 55 F in order to set fruits. The Bonanza peach tree also needs adequate ventilation and a well-lit spot. Like indoor citrus trees, they may need an alternative light source in the winter.

Growing your own trees at home can be a fruitful learning experience with some very rewarding results. By growing food at home, you don’t risk exposing yourself to pesticides, chemicals and inorganic materials that are often used in imported fruits. Plus, you get to work on your gardening skills!
