Fight cancer by adding these healthy foods to your diet

Prevention goes a long way, especially when it comes to chronic diseases. And if eating delicious food is part of the prevention plan, then people would happily adopt this strategy.

Cancer is one of the most life-threatening diseases to ever touch humans. But while it remains without a cure, cancer isn’t inescapable. This dreaded disease can prevented by incorporating healthy lifestyle changes and adopting a balanced diet.

Food is one of the best preventive medicines in existence. People can use functional/medicinal foods to fight cancer both directly and indirectly – either by directly inhibiting the growth of cancer cells or by helping the body fend off the disease.

To achieve this, load up with cancer-fighting foods that can help tip the scales in your favor. Here are some of the best cancer-fighting foods to add to your diet:

Green Tea

Green tea has long been used in Chinese medicine to combat a variety of ailments, but researchers have only recently uncovered its incredible potential for treating cancer. Researchers from Baylor University Medical Center found that green tea’s active ingredient, epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), can kill cancer stem cells and, by extension, prevent chemoresistance. While EGCG is also present in black tea, green tea contains more of it. Although their study focused on treating colorectal cancer, the researchers believe green tea is also effective against other types of cancer.

Ginger

Pre-clinical research shows that a compound found in ginger has 10,000-times greater efficacy when it comes to killing breast cancer stem cells than the popular chemotherapy drug, Taxol. This compound, known as 6-shogaol, is produced when ginger root is cooked or dried, and its cancer-killing activity can take place at concentrations that aren’t toxic to healthy cells, unlike conventional cancer treatments.

Turmeric

According to studies, curcumin, a component of the ancient Indian spice, turmeric, can selectively target cancer stem cells, leaving normal stem cells free to aid in tissue regeneration. Curcumin has been shown to target cancer stem cells in breast cancer, head and neck cancer, pancreatic cancer, colorectal cancer and brain cancer.

Grapes

The compounds present in grapes can also kill colon cancer stem cells. In particular, resveratrol, a phytonutrient found in the skins and seeds of grapes, can cause the death of cancer stem cells in vitro and in vivo. Researchers believe that this compound can be developed into a drug that can prevent colon cancer, one of the most common types of cancer today. The combination of resveratrol and grape seed extract is also effective against cancer cells but harmless for healthy cells.

Other foods that kill cancer stem cells

The abundance of foods that can have a big impact on cancer is a reminder of just how effectively and safely nature can help humans deal with the biggest health issues of the present time. While the foods listed above are some of the most potent anti-cancer foods available, there are plenty of other foods that can also kill cancer stem cells. GreenMedInfo recently compiled a list of 25 such foods. It includes popular superfoods like blueberries, carrots, coffee, grapefruit, mint, cherries, onions, black pepper, thyme and many more.
