Aloe vera reduces fasting blood glucose

Researchers at David Grant Medical Center in California say that people should consume aloe vera to lower their fasting blood glucose and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c). They conducted a meta-analysis, which was published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, to verify the effectiveness of oral consumption of aloe vera on the reduction of fasting blood glucose and HbA1c.

  • For the meta-analysis, the researchers looked at studies of aloe vera’s effect on fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, homeostasis model assessment-estimated insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), fasting serum insulin, fructosamine, and oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) in people with prediabetes and diabetes.
  • The meta-analysis included a total of nine studies that included fasting blood glucose and HbA1c data.
  • Based on the studies, aloe vera significantly reduced fasting blood glucose by 46.6 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) and HbA1c by 1.05 percent.
  • Participants with fasting blood glucose equal to or greater than 200 mg/dL, or those with diabetes, may reap greater benefits from consuming aloe vera; researchers observed a mean fasting blood glucose decrease of 109.9 mg/dL in this population.

In conclusion, these findings suggest that oral consumption of aloe vera is effective in the reduction of fasting blood glucose and HbA1c in people with prediabetes and diabetes.
