Star apple is a powerful alternative medicine for diabetes

Research from the Suranaree University of Technology in Thailand found that star apple (Chrysophyllum cainito L.) has great potential as a natural remedy for diabetes. This study, published in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine, looked at the antidiabetic effects of bark extracts of star apple on mice.

  • Diabetes is one of the most prevalent metabolic disorders, with more than 415 million people suffering from this disease.
  • There are many complications that can arise if diabetes is not properly managed. These include coronary heart disease, peripheral arterial disease, stroke, as well as eye, liver, and kidney damage.
  • The pathology of diabetes involves the increased production of free radicals and reactive oxygen species due to high glucose levels. These molecules damage lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids.
  • Antioxidants are effective strategies for treating diabetes since they can neutralize the harmful free radicals.
  • Star apple is widely utilized because of its ability to reduce blood pressure and inflammation, kill bacteria, promote wound healing, neutralize free radicals, and regulate blood pressure.
  • Although it is commonly used as a natural remedy for diabetes, there are limited studies that look at the basis for this.
  • In this study, the researchers evaluated the antidiabetic activity of extracts from star apple bark on mice. In addition, they assessed the in vitro antioxidant activity of the extracts.
  • The authors of the study also explored the possible mechanisms underlying this property by observing glucose absorption and uptake, as well as alpha-glucosidase activity.

The results of the study showed that star apple has potent antioxidant and antidiabetic activity. Its ability to reduce blood sugar levels was attributed to enhanced glucose uptake by the muscles and the inhibition of alpha-glucosidase activity. Overall, these results prove that star apple can be used as an alternative treatment for diabetes.
