Mushrooms are a delicious way to prevent neurodegenerative diseases

Medicinal and edible mushrooms could be the key to mitigating dementia, according to a study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food. Researchers from the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur explored the health benefits offered by specific types of mushrooms and how they can help in attenuating neurodegenerative disorders.

  • The cases of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, as well as other neurodegenerative conditions continue to rise every year. It is estimated that the numbers will rise to 42 million by the year 2020.
  • Chemical treatments do not have long-lasting effects and often come with a host of side effects.
  • Mushrooms offer many health benefits to both the body and the brain.
  • In vivo and in vitro tests demonstrate positive effects on brain cells courtesy of rare and exotic coumpounds found in different species of medicinal and edible mushrooms.

The health benefits observed to have been offered by mushrooms led the researchers to conclude that these edible fungi could be considered as functional food for the mitigation of neurodegenerative diseases.
