Delaying diabetes with herbs

Researchers from Gargi College (University of Delhi) looked into the use of herbs for the prevention of diabetes. This study, which was published in Herbal Medicine: Open Access, serves as a review of the different anti-diabetic properties of various herbs.

  • Pre-diabetes is a condition that often precedes Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. People with this condition experience impaired glucose tolerance.
  • Some herbs and botanical ingredients have been observed to inhibit or slow down the development of pre-diabetes into diabetes by regulating blood sugar.
  • No unwanted side effects were observed from these herbs unlike in chemical-based treatments.
  • Based on the results of the study the following herbs are shown to prevent the progression of pre-diabetes to diabetes:
    • Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis)
    • Banaba (Lagerstroemia speciosa)
    • Bitter melon (Momordica charantia)
    • Bitter-wood (Quassia amara)
    • Blueberry (Vaccinium myrtillus)

    • Cinnamon (Cinnamomum)
    • Collards
