Eat healthy, live healthy: 5 simple ways to reduce your risk of cancer

Statistics show cancer is constantly on the rise. While this should be cause for alarm, this fact is really not at all surprising, given the lifestyles most Americans lead. The diet of the average American is severely lacking nutrients, filled with artificial sugars and fats, and laden with empty calories. Though many people are loath to admit it, nutrition is one of the biggest players in a person’s overall health. If you want to take a preemptive strike at cancer, these five simple changes are the best way to do it:

  1. Increase intake of fresh foods. Processed foods contain all kinds of additives, many of which have unknown side effects. Add more fresh foods into your diet, and you’ll definitely see a positive difference.
  2. Decrease intake of red meat. A high intake of red meat is associated with an increased risk of bowel cancer. Most Americans don’t get enough protein from plant-derived sources, which help lower cancer risks. Beans, lentils, nuts and quinoa are excellent choices.
  3. Lower your intake of added sugars. Next time, try having some fresh fruit and oatmeal for breakfast instead of pastries or donuts. Added sugars can lead to obesity, which indirectly increases cancer risks.
  4. Avoid high-fat foods. Foods high in trans fats increase your risks of heart disease.
  5. Drink in moderation. Excessive alcohol consumption increases your risk of developing cancer over time.
